Camp

 Buc Tuocs 2008

On Friday afternoon we headed out on a 40 minute drive east to Camp Shands Boy Scouts of America camp.  It is a summer camp east of Melrose on Loyal Lake.  We were the first to arrive from Pack 416 Den 3.  We set up camp and watched a few more scouts from our den arrive.  Jeff helped our Den Leader Anne and her son Cooper's tent up.

After dark we hiked to the lake and looked at the stars.  We could actually see the Milky way!  We hiked back to the camp to have a fire at the pack ring and roasted marsh mellows.

In the morning we had 8am reveley at the camp flag pole.  Wyatt is in the blue jacket next to his friend Andrew.

After saying the pledge of allegiance, we headed down to the flag we headed off to the lake to go fishing.

Above is Wyatt, Andrew, and Ryan.  Nice shot Ryan!

Fishing in the 40 degree morning on wet floating docks.  Even the fish knew better.  We had fun though.  In fishing that is all that matters.

Above is Andrew and his dad Brian.  We hung out with the two of them most of the weekend.  Wyatt, Ryan, and Andrew were buddies for the camp buddy system.

Here is Den 3's Den Leader Anne and her son Cooper.  Wyatt and Cooper played together on a soccer team 2 years ago.

After fishing we played a few games that taught the kids about food cycles and importance of predator/prey balance.  Then it was off to rock climbing.  Wyatt almost made it to the top on the hardest run on the wall.  Good job Wyatt!!!  Along with the rock wall the boys had silly races.

From the wall and races we headed to the rope bridge and zip lines.

Wyatt did very well on both the bridge and the zip line.  The boys also learned to use a compass with a plotted course.  Wyatt really enjoyed the compass course.

Ryan tried to do the bridge but got scared when he got to the top.  Jeff had to get him down.

We did some archery next.

After bows and arrows the boys got to shoot b-b guns!  Wyatt hit his target 3 of 5 times without much help.  Ryan, with the help of a scoutmaster and the kid at the next station, was able to hit his target 3 of 5 as well.

There was a parachute game that Ryan loved.  (Ryan is the little head sticking out above the parachute about a third across the picture from the left.  Wyatt played Ultimate Frisbee.

Monkey Lips!!!

Cooking hotdogs wrapped with biscuit over a fire.

Making Rain sticks.

After a fun day of activities we headed back to camp and had dinner.  We went to the big campfire.  Each of the packs had a skit or song they had to do on stage.  It was a blast.

We had a wonderful time.  We cannot wait to go next year.  Camp Shands is a nice facility.  The bathhouses need work.  It would be fun to camp in the winter here, but we cannot imagine trying to camp in the mosquito summer.  Hope you enjoyed our Camp Buc Tuocs page as much as we enjoyed Buc Tuocs.  If you don't know or haven't figured out, Buc Tuocs is Cub Scout backwards.
